Guided Stop-and-Think Discussions

Use the discussion questions for each chapter or ask open-ended questions such as, “Why does Leo need Ralph right now?” or; “How does Ralph help Leo cope?” Encourage students to justify responses using evidence from text and illustrations.

Double-Entry Journal

Students record powerful quotes from the book in one column, and their personal reactions or connections in the other.

Art as a Window to Hope

Show art pieces (ex: Picasso’s ‘Dove of Peace,’ Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’). Students discuss how art can inspire hope.

Helping Hands

Brainstorm ways your class can help others in your local community (e.g. food drive, winter coat collection).
