Symbols of Peace

Students examine peace symbols such as doves, sunflowers and olive branches. Through discussion, students analyze what each symbol represents and why symbols are used to communicate complex ideas. Students predict how symbols may appear in the text.

Cover & Illustration Walk

Display the cover and do a picture walk through several pages without reading the text. Ask students what they notice about the children, their actions and their expressions. Invite predictions about what the book might be teaching about friendship.

Cover and Title Analysis

Display the book cover and title. Ask students what they see on the cover. What is the setting? Ask students to predict who Leo and Ralph might be and how they might be connected. Encourage students to support predictions using visual evidence from the cover.

Visual Clues and Predictions

Show students several illustrations from the book (without reading the text). Ask them to predict what the story might be about. Who are the characters? What might be happening? What emotions are they feeling?

Chart the emotional and moral growth of Hans and Sophie from childhood through activism using evidence from the text.
