Do you have too much stuff? What kind of stuff do you have too much of? Is there anything you can do about it?  What does the author mean when she writes “what if more isn’t always better”?

The Author’s Message

What is the author’s message? Ask students to turn and talk to their elbow partner. Share ideas with the whole class. Students may do a written response or an illustration of the author’s message.

Discovering Something New

While digging for clams with her grandmother, what did Alego discover? Have you ever unexpectedly discovered something new and exciting?

Expressing Anger in Appropriate Ways

Have students identify ways in which they handle their anger in positive ways to calm themselves down. List these on a chart. Post the chart in the classroom and refer to it when situations arise.
