Importance of Illustrations

Ask students: What do you notice about all the illustrations throughout the story? (All have a red hue.) Why do you think the illustrator may have done this? (Maybe as we read the story, we will understand why.)

Picture Walk

Do a “picture walk” through the story, noting the significance of water throughout the book. Ask students: Why do you think the author and illustrator included so many references to and pictures with water?

Make Predictions

Ask students: What do you predict might happen to the special canoe that Shi-shi-etko gives to her little brother? Will that canoe help Shin-chi to remember his memories from home?

Investigate the Front Cover

Looking at the cover of the book, what do you see? Imagine you are a detective: using only clues from the cover, deduce what kind of place you think this story will occur in? What does that place look, feel, sound and smell like? Who will this story be about?
