Have students skim the novel to make a list of the restrictions the Taliban placed on women. Point out that sometimes the restriction is obviously stated, as in “The Taliban had ordered all the girls and women in Afghanistan to stay inside their homes” (page 7) and sometimes it can be inferred, as in “Their mother had been kicked out of her job as a writer for a Kabul radio station” (page 7). Have students compare and discuss their lists in small groups.
