Procedure:
- Locate the Arctic on a world map.
- Examine photographs of Arctic landscapes.
- Discuss what students already know about the Arctic.
- Create a K-W-L chart:
- What do we Know?
- What do we Want to Know?
- What have we Learned?
- Introduce the concept of permafrost and explain how it plays an important role in the novel

Extension:
